I just took a test for a job at the local news station WJET TV. Of course I prepared for the test by reading the newspaper, watching the news, looking at the Erie City Council and so on, but what I saw in the test actually shocked me. Usually, I can handle tests really well and I never ever failed one, but this test made me really question my knowledge of current events and personalities. Some of the questions were actually easy, but some questions asked me about the names of the Presidential Cabinet of the US, or another question asked for the name of the Supreme Court Attorney General's name or other questions asked where important people like John McCain or Tony Blair are from. I would say the questions were a good mixture of current events, geography, history, politics and general knowledge. However, what I painfully realized was that the knowledge that you acquire from your college classes is by far not enough for such a test. I always use the excuse that I don't have time to watch the news or read the newspaper, but this test (and I should have known this before) showed me again how important it is to be informed.
I managed to pass the test with the little knowledge I could stir up in my brain (I also had to take a writing exam which most likely saved my butt) and I now work as a General Assignment editor for the Action News on the weekends and although today is my first day, I already (or again) realized how important it is to know what is going on around you; not only if you work in the news. I think I'll go back to reading the newspaper now...

Couldn't agree more. We need to have a world of knowledge when entering the job market. I am in the process of job hunting and have experienced the same feeling you did while you took your test. I read ALL the time. Books are my passion. I read magazines. I read newspapers. I try to catch some tv as well. However, I still feel I do not have enough information, and desire more. My advice to everyone is never stop learning, keep you minds engaged in the world around you.
first off congratulations again on your promotion :) . I do agree though however how nobody is informed. People today do not read as much as they should or watch enough news. They watch sports or reality TV. I am glad you passed your exam and i do recommend and encourage that people read and watch more news to keep up with everything that is going on.
An outside observation here.....
I was unaware that blogging was taught at school. I find most bloggers just start up and go for it. This learning experience may improve blogging as a medium in the long run.
I presume Sheridan is the Prof. For the sake of those who have a tough time with blogging and getting it right, or maybe own just a bit of low self-esteem, even Mr. Sheridan's blog needs help.
There are few comments.
Do only students read this?
Is it the lack of posts to comment on?
At any rate, the 4th line of his profile under "About Me" has an error and should be corrected; anyone in class with errors may point that out to him. I decline as he holds a black belt for cryin'out loud!
Kudos to Gretchen Beth.
Apparently, these are class assignments. They are unlikely to be picked up around the globe as they compete with tens of millions of blogs.
Gretchen Beth is located on Erie Blogs, and scrolls to the entire community. She opened her blog to local, massive, public inspection. That takes guts, especially when the movie was down for the opening of the day...but timely fixed.
I have read every post and every comment in all the class.
The singlemost moving, and unexpected comment comes from Twattius Ode to His Lover. My condolences Twattius. I pray you maintain relationship with her family. They have no children now, but you are like a son-in-law they will never have.
You have written eloquence.
If I were to hire one person in this roll call, it would be Mike. He writes I Couldn't Think of a Title, but man...can HE Think! Nuance and depth are all over each of his posts. Mike may want to consider a career in communications. Your thoughts are on the money, inquisitive, balanced, and timely for all of us.
I have expressed Emily should get an "A". She should also continue blogging. Good form!
I liked So Sayeth I, except each post seemed to come with a chip on the shoulder sound. Tone that down and be advised, I am keenly aware of it, since I have that internet persona myself, tho like "Sayeth", we are both innocent and warm people. :-D
Javi, watch those colors. They are hard to read.
Megan, the Brown Eyed, just show folks your Thanksgiving grateful post and your life will take off fine from there.
Please note how a sole comment changed Tell It To Someone from a worn out blogger to an inspired "I can do this!" individual.
ALL of you could comment to one another waaay more. And, those comments should be of such quality, that the blogger can comment AFTER the comment, either in reply direct, or in a new post. That's how you build.
Casey Captain, you have been blessed with good manners. Do not let them be overshadowed by procrastination.
Nadine offers a glimpse into Common Sense and real life. She will do well as she can observe and then, relate it to others. Welcome to communication.
Jeff, the Phillies are stupid. You are wise there.
And, as a fellow Brown's fan, I believe you should also get an "A", for you are going to have a lifetime of punishment being a Brown's fan. Those Kardiac Kids cost me a bundle of money every year it seems. Here is a tip. If the Browns are ahead by 21 points at the half, you are going to have to pay a bet off. They will blow it somehow.
If they are 35 points behind at any time, and the fans have left, watch for a win.
Heath, Danger Bear, and Gretchen, when you post a picture profile, post you, not two. No one knows who is who, so why put the picture up at all?
I like that each of these make their stand with conviction in their posts.
Liesa, I am deeply sorry about your dad dying. Mine died 24 years ago and I miss him. Mom died a few months ago and I am an orphan without them. I visited the grave this past weekend and I find your observations on Life accurate.
I was grateful for your kind words to your dad.
A lot of girls turn to womanhood without a father anymore. You have been blessed.
The entire class should have commented condolences, if not a portion of their heart.
You are in my prayers, Liesa.
Katkin, the picture that you chose to tell the story of your Depression was an awesome inspiration and declaration at once.
I admire that post.
I also believe that depression is a universal anymore for all of us at some stage in life. It behooves others to reread her post for when that shadow engulfs your own life.
When you are in quicksand, you will sink and die as you fight your way out.
Lay flat on the mud and "swim", ever so slowly to the edge of hard ground and you can pull yourself back on solid ground again. But go slow or sink. Good luck to you.
I am afraid the semester will be over unless I post this without mentioning all. You are all to be commended for your efforts and career choice.
in the future, I hope the prof uses Word Press instead of Blogger. Blogger is yesterday and impossible to comment on, and fails links regularly.
For those of you continuing your blog, make the switch NOW to Word Press. You will be amazed at the difference. So will Sheridan if he commands all to use it next time.
Have a marvelous life all of you, and do so each day.
Best regards to all.
